Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street Reconstruction

Roosevelt Avenue - 74th Street ReconstructionSkanska USA Civil was awarded this $87 million project from New York City Transit to completely renovate the massive Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street Station Complex, which includes a large bus station at the same location.

This project included reconstruction of all architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and communications elements of the station. The work at the subway stations featured major reconstruction of transfer passageways and stairs, including reconfiguration of the IRT mezzanine.

In order to make the station compliant with the American's with Disabilities Act (ADA), various system improvements were built. This effort required extensive reorganization of station areas. The project team relocated signals and fiber optic communications cables, install photovoltaic electrical generation panels and communications systems, which include signals and fiber-optic cable relocation.

The project included major reconfiguration of a 75 ft. long x 42" diameter sewer siphon, and the relocation of an adjacent 90 ft. long 24" diameter sewer main in order to widen the 73rd Street passageway from 12 feet to 28 feet. Many of these stairs were relocated or reconfigured. The contract also requierd structural and water Roosevelt Avenue - 74th Street Reconstructionremedy repairs to the deteriorated station components, full architectural treatments to the station floors, walls, stairs and ceilings throughout the complex and reconstruction of the IRT mezzanine, underpass and platform canopies.

Due to the large amount of passenger traffic and the fact that the station is surrounded by Roosevelt Avenue, Broadway and 74th Street, vehicular and train traffic must operate with minimal disruption from construction activities.
